Samsung SSD 830 Series (256GB)


If 2011 wasn't the year that solid-state drives (SSDs) went mainstream, it was a year they delivered newly groundbreaking performance. First came the incredibly fast 240GB OCZ Vertex 3, which was followed by its slightly less impressive 120GB version. Those looking for a lower-capacity SSD had at least one outstanding choice, the 128GB Samsung SSD 830 Series. But when Samsung's drives hit higher capacities, how well do they stand up against OCZ's? Pretty well, at least with regards to the 256GB version ($429.99 list)?though it doesn't come out on top in every situation.

Even so, it has all the features you have a right to expect from a top SSD contender at the beginning of 2012, starting with 6Gbps SATA III. (Samsung's 2010 debut consumer model, the SSD 470 Series, only used 3Gbps SATA II.) More impressively, this 2.5-inch-form-factor drive (which measures only 7mm in height?on the short side for an SSD) is Samsung all the way down, from its stylish and shiny black brushed-metal frame to its three-core controller to the DRAM to the 20nm MLC toggle DDR NAND flash memory itself. Samsung even claims that the drive's wear-leveling and garbage collection technologies are proprietary (though traditional TRIM is supported). You can expect to get about 238GB of usable space from the drive (the remaining gigabytes are dedicated to overprovisioning), and it's covered by a three-year warranty. Other nice inclusions are discs containing the full version of Norton Ghost and Samsung's SSD Magician software for performing tasks like optimizing performance (via garbage collection) and updating the drive's firmware and, as of early January 2012, a free download code for Batman: Arkham City.

Performance was robust as well, with the Samsung drive constantly trading top scores and times with the 240GB Vertex 3. What drive came out ahead and on which task depended on the particular application. On our AS SSD benchmark, OCZ's drive generally did better with reads and Samsung's with writes, and we witnessed something similar on the ATTO Disk Benchmark?up to a point. From 0.5KB to 2KB, OCZ owned the reads and the Samsung writes; at 4KB the two flipped and continued alternating wins straight down the line through 512KB. With results upwards of 546MBps in 128KB, 256KB, and 512KB sequential reads, the Samsung drive even surpassed its own stated performance rating of 520MBps?an impressive feat. (For the record, the Samsung drive also promises up to 400MBps sequential write speeds, and routinely performed above that rating, too.)

It was after that, however, that the Samsung's limitations began to show. The OCZ took the rest of the rest of the ATTO tests?both write and read?up to 8MB, all of the CrystalDiskMark tests except Sequential and 4KB QD32 reads, and all of the PCMark 7 storage trials. The biggest discrepancy we noticed was on CrystalDiskMark's 4KB QD32 Write test: The OCZ delivered a result of 252MBps, whereas the Samsung drive could only muster up 147.4MBps. Combined with the ATTO results, this shows that, when you're more intensively moving larger amounts of data, the 256GB Samsung drive can't quite keep up with the competition.

Based on what we observed, the Samsung SSD 830 Series isn't quite able to wrest our Editors' Choice title away from the 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 (which is also priced at $399.99 list, $30 less than the Samsung)?but in more standard everyday applications it's essentially a neck-and-neck race. Our standard position in situations like this is that, all else being equal, when you're paying this much money for this (relatively) little storage space, you want the fastest speeds possible, and you get those with the OCZ drive. Nevertheless, Samsung's drive is an attractive, consistent performer ideal for slightly lower-level applications, and its larger amount of storage space and free software may help cushion the blow of the marginally slower transfer rates that just keep the SSD 830 Series from taking the top prize.

Many Politicians Softening Opposition to Same Sex Marriages (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | A major step in the effort to legalize same-sex marriage was taken on Friday, January 20, when a coalition of 80 mayors announced their support for legalizing marriage between gays.

Mike Bloomberg, mayor of New York City and head of Mayors for Freedom to Marry said ,"Mayors understand that welcoming committed gay couples to the rights and responsibilities of marriage isn't just the right thing to do." Mayors of Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles are each supportive of such measures.

This announcement comes one day after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie softened his opposition to same-sex marriage and that is a good thing. His most recent statement is that he will make a "deliberate and thoughtful" decision if the New Jersey legislature passes a bill. Previously, in 2009, he vowed to return to the legislature any bill legalizing same-sex marriage "with a big red veto across it."

Governor Christie and other politicians may have been influenced by a recent poll conducted by Quinnipiac University which showed that a majority of New Jersey voters favor legalizing marriage between same-sex partners. This is the first time that more than 50 percent of the respondents favored same-sex marriage. The key word here is "marriage", because New Jersey has recognized domestic partnerships or civil unions since 2006.

If, and when the bill is passed and signed into law, New Jersey would then become the seventh state where same-sex couples can get married. There are also 10 states which recognize civil unions or domestic partnerships.

This is important because during the Republican debates, many candidates, including front-runner Mitt Romney, have called for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. You need 39 states to ratify an amendment and the more states which recognize marriage, the less likely that passage would occur.

While it is wonderful that some states recognize same-sex marriage, the real progress will only come when the federal government and the IRS recognize that two people of the same sex can be married.

Unfortunately, much of the discrimination is in the form of financial punishment. Gay couples cannot save on their federal income taxes by filing a joint return. They are not entitled to the unlimited marital deduction which is available to heterosexual couples, and that makes their estate issues more complex and expensive.

Heterosexual couples can contribute to a spousal IRA even if one spouse does not work. Gay couples are denied that right. In a traditional marriage, the surviving spouse is entitled to roll over the retirement assets of their deceased loved one without incurring tax consequences. This process is denied gays.

Granting same-sex couples the same rights and entitlements that heterosexual couples receive should be fundamental and the sign of a maturing society.

One-quarter of South Korean phone owners have a Galaxy S II, according to Samsung

Since going on sale last April, Samsung has moved some five million Galaxy S II units in its native South Korea. According to the company, that number means that roughly one in every four phone owners in the country now rocks the popular handset, enough for the company to unofficially declare it the nation's "national smartphone," a fact that's pretty tough to deny, given that South Korea's total population is somewhere in the ballpark of 49 million. All in all, not a bad haul for a handset that launched around nine months ago.

Lovefilm, Disney UK deal brings ABC content across the pond

If you're living across the pond and hankering for ABC's content, it's en route. In what could be considered a response to Netflix's expansion to the UK market, Lovefilm has joined forces with Disney UK to offer members on-demand streaming access to ABC Studios' content. Available titles include Castle, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Happy Endings, Grey's Anatomy and the Ghost Whisperer, with all episodes available after their first run in the UK market. Compatible streamers include the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iPad, smart TV's and Blu-ray players and the service itself starts at £4.99 ($7.65) per month. Still no news as to when the Camo Snuggie will make its European debut.

Former President Carter praises Egypt elections

Former President Jimmy Carter on Tuesday dismissed concerns about the success of Islamist parties in Egypt's first elections since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak, because it represents the will of the Egyptian people.

Carter's Atlanta-based Carter Center has sent 40 observers to monitor Egypt's staggered parliamentary elections since voting started in late November, the freest and fairest in decades. Under Mubarak, elections were blatantly rigged, and turnout was often tiny.

Carter said his organization was "very pleased" with the conduct of the elections so far.

"There have been some problems in general, but the will of the people has been expressed accurately," Carter told reporters at polling station in a girls school in the Cairo neighborhood of Rod al-Farag.

Some voters in a run-off election for the third round to elect the lower house of parliament stopped to snap photos of the former president with their mobile phones.

Islamist parties have taken a solid majority in the parliament. The political party of the Muslim Brotherhood has won between 40 and 50 percent of the vote, and a coalition of ultraconservative Salafi Muslim parties received another 20 percent.

Responding to a reporter's question, Carter dismissed the idea that the U.S. should be concerned about the Islamist victory.

"I don't have any problem with that, and the U.S. government doesn't have any problem with that either," he said. "We want the will of the Egyptian people to be expressed."

Carter declined to take sides in a thorny debate about who will select the 100-person body to draft a new Egyptian constitution this year. While the newly elected parliament is supposed to appoint the drafters, generals of the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces, which took control of the country after Mubarak was ousted by a popular uprising in February, have indicated they want a significant role in the process, fearing the strength of the Islamists.

Carter said only that his organization would try to foster "a peaceful relationship between the SCAF and the elected officials to write a constitution that will give the Egyptian people permanent peace and permanent freedom and permanent democracy."

The visit was Carter's first public appearance since his arrival in Egypt Monday for a five-day visit, in which he will inspect polling sites and counting stations and meet Egyptian officials and political party representatives.

Journalists and curious voters mobbed Carter when he entered the school's dirt courtyard, surrounded by security guards and Egyptian military police. Dressed in a matching rugby shirt and cap, both bearing the Carter Center logo, he chatted briefly with election officials before attempting to hold a news conference that was cut short because of too much commotion among the journalists.

One reporter asked if he had seen any election violations.

"No, I didn't see anything except a pack of security people and microphones in my face," Carter said before security guards escorted him away.

His group plans to release its complete observations on the three stages of the vote on Friday.

One hundred years of South Africa?s ANC - the good, the not so good and the ugly

South Africa's liberation movement will kick off its 100th anniversary celebrations on Sunday with a huge multimillion-dollar jamboree and a stadium filled with 100,000 cheering loyalists, along with dozens of heads of state and other dignitaries from around the world.

The African National Congress, the oldest liberation party in Africa, is planning a full year of events, including the lighting of a centenary flame that will tour the country.

The ANC continues to win landslide victories in every South African election. But its triumphal mood is dampened by a growing internal crisis, sparked by factional feuding, high-level corruption and its failure to fulfill its job-creation promises. As the party looks to the future, there are huge challenges still ahead of it.

By overcoming the apartheid regime in 1994, the ANC achieved a victory of historic proportions. How has it ruled since then? Here's a report card on the ANC's performance in government.

RACIAL RECONCILIATION A-

Racial tensions still sometimes flare up, provoked by extremists who plague both sides of the racial divide, but in daily life South Africans get along better than ever before. As neighbours and work colleagues, South Africans have largely reconciled with each other and racial conflict has been surprisingly rare.

The ANC has made an effort to include whites, Indians and mixed-race ?coloureds? in each of its cabinets since 1994. Nelson Mandela took a huge step toward racial integration when he embraced his former apartheid foes and cheered for South Africa?s rugby team, long the symbol of Afrikaner sports. White extremist groups, which launched terrorist campaigns in the early 1990s, have faded into obscurity.

Even when lingering resentments erupt to the surface, the silent majority in South Africa has opted for moderation. Many whites, for example, refused to support the zealous white activists who launched a court battle to seek the banning of a liberation song that included the words ?shoot the Boer? (a reference to Afrikaner farmers).

Going forward: One of the biggest remaining issues is the continuing threat of xenophobic attacks against African migrants in South Africa. Scores of migrants were killed in attacks in 2008 and others are often threatened with eviction from black townships.

HOUSING AND BASIC SERVICES C+

The ANC has made solid progress in housing and basic services. Three million new houses have been constructed for the poor since 1994, and more than 90 per cent of families have access to clean drinking water today, compared to 62 per cent when apartheid ended. Similarly, about 85 per cent of homes have electricity today, compared to just 36 per cent in 1994.

Unemployment remains stubbornly high, with an unofficial rate of nearly 40 per cent. But the ANC established a system of monthly grants for about 15 million poor people, ensuring that hunger would be mostly avoided.

Going forward: Despite the improvements, there is still a shortage of proper housing and some townships have erupted into violent protests over a lack of electricity and other services.

HEALTH AND EDUCATION C-

For years, the ANC government under ex-president Thabo Mbeki was in denial on the AIDS crisis that was devastating the country. He delayed the introduction of life-saving medicine, causing an estimated 365,000 premature deaths. The government improved its performance on AIDS issues after Mr. Mbeki?s departure, but the death rate remains high.

Hospitals in black townships often suffer from shortages of staff and equipment. The government has promised a system of national health insurance to ensure that the poor have access to health care, but the plan will take 15 years to roll out.

South Africa?s education system is equally weak. Black education was systematically underfunded during the apartheid era, but its improvement since 1994 has been slow. South Africa is ranked just 139th in the world in the literacy and numeracy skills of its primary-school students.

Israeli Democracy in Peril

Perhaps surprisingly, it was Israeli society that more closely resembled its neighbors in 2011. Developments within Israel seemed to predict exciting progress: A tent city sprang up in the center of Tel Aviv, and the J14 social protest movement mobilized some of the largest rallies in Israeli history with a call for greater equality and social investment. But most of the year?plus the start of 2012?has been characterized by the ever more visible fraying of Israeli democracy, as Israel?s lurch toward intolerance, fundamentalism, and xenophobia gathers pace. This phenomenon, unlike the J14 movement, was as much top-down as it was bottom-up. While radical settler youths were uprooting Palestinian olive groves, attacking Israeli progressives, and disabling IDF jeeps, members of the governing coalition in Parliament were advancing legislation to restrict the freedom of Israeli human rights NGOs, trying to prevent Israel?s Palestinian Arab citizens from commemorating their own history , and holding committee hearings on the ?anti-Israeli? activities of the American J Street organization (Likud lawmaker Ofir Akunis actually praised Sen. Joe McCarthy as a role model).

Women's college basketball roundup: Georgia loses to Tennessee; Auburn beats Alabama

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Glory Johnson had 22 points and 13 rebounds as No. 6 Tennessee pulled away from No. 16 Georgia 80-51 on Thursday night.

Ariel Massengale scored 15 of her 19 points before halftime, while Johnson did most of her work after the break. Johnson now has 1,331 career points and is four rebounds shy of 1,000.

Johnson hit the first basket of the second half to give Tennessee a 38-27 lead, but Lady Bulldogs scored the next five points to cut the margin to six points. The Lady Vols (10-3, 2-0 SEC) answered with a 14-4 run to pull away.

Meredith Mitchell led the Lady Bulldogs (12-3, 1-1) with 14 points.

The Lady Vols held advantages of 52-32 rebounding and 42-12 in the paint and finished 20 of 28 at the line.

Tennessee hasn?t dropped an SEC game since a 53-50 loss at Georgia on Jan. 21, 2010.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Auburn beat Alabama at Foster Auditorium as sophomore forward Tyrese Tanner scored a game-high 20 points for the Tigers.

Freshman guard Hasina Muhammad added 12 points, and junior forward Blanche Alverson chipped in 11 points for Auburn.

Sophomore guard Shafontaye Myers led the Tide with 13 points, while senior guard Ericka Russell added 12 points for Alabama. Junior forward Erin Hogue grabbed nine boards to lead the Tide in rebounding. Auburn was Alverson and senior center Chantel Hilliard were the leading rebounders for the Tigers, each grabbing seven boards.

With the loss, Alabama falls to 10-6 on the season, 0-2 in Southeastern Conference play. Auburn improves to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the league. Alabama returns to action Sunday, January 8, when it faces LSU in Baton Rouge. Tipoff is scheduled for 2p.m., and the game will be televised regionally by the SEC Network.

Grad students forge digital light projector into medical imaging device, can't find dates

If it's a geek badge of honor to find an entirely new use for something, then the grad students at UC Irvine have earned theirs. Over at the university, a group of grad students have hacked an off-the-shelf digital light projector to create a spatial frequency domain imaging system. Once complete, the budding mad scientists were able to image their thesis adviser's bicycling injuries and have used it to measure the oxygenation of skin flaps during reconstructive breast surgery. Click past the break for a video of the device in action, and remember this: helping your professor with their sports injuries and reconstructed bosoms may not equal Dean's List, but it sure can't hurt.

Ginger Orange Olive Oil Muffins: On-the-Go Awesome

Around here, busy times call for muffins. They?re perfect for a quick breakfast, spur of the moment errand, or an afternoon at the playground. These muffins have a hint of sea salt, orange, ginger, and a touch of chili powder to spice things up. The overall effect is sweet, savory, and delicious. And, with whole wheat flour and just a touch of sugar, they?re a treat you can feel good about.

Ginger Orange Olive Oil Muffins
makes 10 large muffins

1 3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour (Bob?s Red Mill is terrific)
2 tablespoons fine ground corn meal
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon sea salt plus more for muffin tops
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup orange zest
1/4 cup crystallized ginger, minced
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
2 tablespoons yogurt
3/4 cup olive oil

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 10 muffin cups with paper liners.

Combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and chili powder in a large bowl and set aside.

Using a peeler, peel the zest off of the orange (do your best to avoid the with pith). Slice the zest into thin strips, and then mince. Set aside.

Beat together the sugar and eggs until creamy, then add the vinegar, zest, ginger, and yogurt. With mixer on low, fold in the olive oil. Pour into the flour mixture and stir just until combined.

Spoon into the muffin tin, filling each cup nearly to the brim. Sprinkle the top of each muffin with a tiny pinch of sea salt. Bake for 30 ? 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool for 15 minutes and serve. Muffins will keep sealed and at room temperature for 2 days.

Research finds trigger for breast cancer spread

Research led by Shyamal Desai, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has discovered a key change in the body's defense system that increases the potential for breast cancer to spread to other parts of the body. The results, reported for the first time, are featured in the January 2012 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine.

For cancer cells shape matters. All cells contain a protein cytoskeleton that acts as a scaffold determining overall shape and function, the position of the cell within an organ or tissue, and the ability of the cell to communicate with its neighbors to prevent the uncontrolled growth typical of cancer cells. However, cell transformations that result in cancer disrupt the genetic programs of the cell and alter the cytoskeleton, leading to changes in shape, function, and cell communication that produce uncontrolled growth and metastatic spreading of the tumor. Understanding these changes to the normal genetic program of a cell and the consequences that ultimately lead to cancer have been major challenges to cancer biologists.

This research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, found that a cellular defense system called the ISG15 pathway, which is normally involved in fighting bacterial and viral infection, is triggered in breast cancer to disrupt normal cytoskeletal function and increase the possibility that the cancer cells will metastasize, or spread.

"Our findings, for the first time, causally link an alteration in the ISG15 pathway during transformation with metastatic potential," notes Dr. Shyamal Desai, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, "thus providing a novel therapeutic target for future drug discovery."

Cells contain a protein quality control pathway termed the Proteasome that breaks down damaged and unneeded proteins to their component amino acids for recycling. Such proteins are marked for degradation by flagging them with a small protein called Ubiquitin, which is then recognized by the Proteasome. Alterations in the genetic program that controls the Ubiquitin/Proteasome system have been known for some time to cause cell transformation and cancer. More recently, Dr. Desai and her colleagues have demonstrated that, unlike normal cells, transformed cancer cells produce increased amounts of a related control system that marks proteins with another small protein called ISG15.

Previous research reports that the amount of ISG15 is increased in high-grade compared with low-grade cancers. The ISG15 system is normally activated by interferon and is part of an ancient cellular immune response designed to counter bacterial and viral infection. By a still unidentified mechanism, cancer cell transformation activates the ISG15 pathway. Dr. Desai and colleagues have previously reported that activation of the ISG15 system interferes with function of the Ubiquitin/Proteasome pathway. In their latest work, Dr. Desai and colleagues show that several key proteins that regulate cell movement, invasion, and metastasis are blocked from Proteasome degradation by the ISG15 system and that genetic manipulation to inhibit this pathway reverses cancer cell transformation, suggesting an approach to blocking cancer progression.

Arthur Haas, PhD, the Roland Coulson Professor and Chairman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, discovered the ISG15 pathway and co-discovered the Ubiquitin/Proteasome system that was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. "These results provide a functional link between the Ubiquitin and ISG15 pathways that reveals how small cell alterations can yield large overall consequences for cell transformation."

The research team also included Arthur Haas, PhD, and Dr. Desai's lab members Ryan Reed, Surendran Sankar, PhD, and Julian Burks in the LSUHSC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Jerome Breslin, PhD, in the LSUHSC Department of Physiology, and Ashok Pullikuth, PhD, in the LSUHSC Department Pharmacology, as well as scientists at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

"Although this current project focused on breast cancer, ISG15 is also elevated in a variety of cancers," concludes Dr. Desai. "Therefore, this discovery has important implications in other cancers as well."

NYT: Signs point to tepid consumer spending for 2012

American consumers are running out of tricks.

As the weak economy has trudged on, they have leaned on credit cards to pay for holiday gifts, many bought at discounts. They are dipping into savings to cover spikes in gas, food and rent. They are substituting domestic vacations for international trips, squeezing more life out of their washing machines and refrigerators and switching to alternatives as meat prices have risen.

That leaves little room for a big increase in spending in 2012, economists say, a shaky foundation for the most important pillar of the American economy.

?The consumer is far from healthy,? said Steve Blitz, senior economist for ITG Investment Research.

Even the seemingly robust holiday shopping season is raising concern. After a strong start on Thanksgiving weekend, a pronounced lull followed, causing retailers to mark down products heavily in the week before Christmas. While final numbers for the season are not in, analysts say they are worried that retailers had to eat into profits to generate high revenues.

Consumer spending makes up 70 percent of the economy, so until it ignites, general growth is likely to be sluggish.

Incomes flat
Macroeconomic Advisers, a forecasting company, projects growth of around 2 percent for the first half of this year, down from an estimate of 3.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 and just 1.8 percent in the third quarter.

For consumers, the reasons for the sluggishness are clear: incomes are essentially flat, job growth is modest, and more than 40 percent of the new jobs in the last two years have been in low-paying sectors like retail and hospitality.

While consumer spending is not ?going to collapse,? said Joel Prakken, senior managing director at Macroeconomic Advisers, ?there are some headwinds there.?

Sarah M. Manley, a marketing consultant with two young sons in Waconia, Minn., has developed coping strategies in the last few years. Laid off in 2008, she started a business. She and her husband can make their mortgage payments and are paying off debts from when a storm damaged their roof.

?It?s not necessarily that I?m saving more money, but I?m paying off some of the debts that were amassed during the last three years, just trying to make headway,? Ms. Manley said.

To do that, she has changed habits. She uses the app GasBuddy to check prices at nearby stations before she buys gas for her car. She buys seasonal food on sale and freezes it ? for Valentine?s Day, she plans to prepare crab legs she bought and froze last summer ? and she is stocking up on holiday hams. She has switched from buying milk in gallon containers to buying it for less in plastic bags from the local gas station.

For big purchases, like the laptop she bought last summer, Ms. Manley still relies on credit, but is careful. She opens credit card accounts offering an introductory rate of no interest, then closes them just before the annual percentage rate kicks in.

?Everybody?s learned how to be frugal in the last two or three years,? she said.

Housing prices still falling
Economic indicators suggest that, while things may not get worse for consumers this year, they will not get much better. In the third quarter of 2011, the most recent period for which figures are available, consumer spending rose slightly more than 1 percent, according to the Commerce Department.

Although housing sales have recently shown signs of recovery, prices are still falling and mortgage lenders are cautious. In November, contracts represented by 33 percent of members of the National Association of Realtors did not close, up from just 9 percent a year ago.

And with more than one in every five borrowers still owing more than their homes are worth, many homeowners feel too pressed to spend on much more than the essentials.

The stock market did not help consumers, either. Because of turmoil in the markets in the late summer and early fall, household wealth declined by $2.4 trillion in that period, a contraction likely to make people think twice about big purchases.

Adding to the uncertainty, financial weakness in Europe, and the potential expiration of the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance benefits in two months, could further soften spending.

?I used to say people will always beg, borrow or steal to spend,? said Allen Sinai, chief global economist at Decision Economics, a consulting firm. He has changed his mind. He is forecasting ?firmer? spending in 2012, but said the economy would ?not grow anywhere near our growth in previous postrecession periods.?

Some signs suggest borrower distress. Credit card delinquencies increased for the first time in almost two years in the third quarter, according to credit bureau TransUnion, though the delinquency rates are still very low. And mortgage delinquencies were about 6 percent at the end of 2011, down a little from a year ago but higher than earlier last year, compared with the prerecession rate of 1.5 to 2 percent.

?That?s a long way to go to get us back to a steady state,? said Steve Chaouki, group vice president for financial services for TransUnion.

Still repaying debt from boom times
Another crucial factor holding back the American consumer is that many people who borrowed heavily during the boom to buy cars or appliances, or take vacations, are still repaying debt and cannot win approval for new loans, so they must find other ways to pay for things.

Though shopping has remained relatively strong, the level of consumer debt in October was at its highest in two years, meaning people are buying on credit rather than with income. And the savings rate in November was 3.5 percent, the lowest since 2007, which suggests shoppers are also buying with savings.

?We don?t think this is sustainable and expect slowing spending growth going forward,? Colin McGranahan, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, wrote in a note to clients that reviewed numbers for November.

In Copley, Ohio, a suburb of Akron, Lynette Paudel, 39, said that some things are looking up: her husband, Govind, received a raise in September when he was recruited to a mechanical engineering job in Akron at a French company.

But she said she was likely to use that extra income to establish a cushion in their savings account and pay off credit card balances. She said it would also ease the strain of sending money to her husband?s family in Nepal each month.

?I know we?re lucky,? said Ms. Paudel, a high school English teacher who said neither she nor her husband lost their jobs in the downturn or its aftermath. But, she said, ?we?re naturally fairly frugal? and plan to remain that way. She said the family will camp during summer vacation and will not replace her 2003 minivan ?until it breaks.?

Even some growth areas in the economy can be explained by tapped-out consumers. Take auto sales, which rose about 10 percent nationwide in 2011 from a year earlier.

?People can only hold onto their cars for so long,? said Romolo Debottis, new-car sales manager at Mike Bass Ford in Sheffield Village, a suburb of Cleveland. He said sales at the dealership should increase this year to 2007 levels, the prerecession peak. ?A lot of them have done that above and beyond what they normally would, and they?re just ready to spend money and buy a new vehicle.?

Colo. driver killed by branch steered car to safety

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado man who was killed when a 3-foot tree branch flew through his windshield and impaled him in the chest was able to steer the car to safety before losing consciousness.

The wife of 61-year-old James Baker-Jarvis told the Daily Camera that her husband was able to pull the Subaru Outback over to the roadside, saving her from any injury. Baker-Jarvis died later at a hospital.

Saturday's incident north of Boulder came as high winds swept through the Northern Rockies, toppling two semis, forcing shutdowns along long stretches of highways and causing some 19,000 power failures throughout Colorado.

In Wyoming, two people were injured Saturday when debris blew off the roof of a Cheyenne Sam's Club store. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that at least five other people were treated at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center for wind-related injuries.

None of the Wyoming injuries was considered life-threatening. The winds reached gusts of 76 mph in Cheyenne, said Tim Trudel, a forecaster for the National Weather Service.

Cheyenne Fire and Rescue Battalion Cmdr. Pat Hobby responded to the scene and said cars in the parking lot were also damaged by the blowing debris.

"That wind can be dangerous," he said. "When you start getting that high wind, (it) just wears and tears on everything."

In Fort Collins, Colo., wind toppled a large light pole at Hughes Stadium, home of the Colorado State University football team. The Coloradoan reports that the pole crashed onto the upper press box level and slid down into stadium seating. There were no injuries and no immediate damage estimate.

Baker-Jarvis was a theoretical physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. His wife said that he had hoped to one day bicycle across America.

"He loved to be outside," Karen Baker-Jarvis said.

Understanding the atomization spray process is not only of academic interest but is also important to various industry applications such as combustion, coating, and chemical synthesis. Significant experimental investigations concerning spray behavior have been conducted in the past. Fundamental understanding of the spray process is, however, still lacking and lags behind applications due to the high complexity of its stochastic behavior. Prof. LIN Jianzhong and his group proposed a comprehensive three-dimensional model to predict the droplet mean size and other spray characteristics by describing both primary and secondary atomization. Recently, they reviewed the theories, practical modeling treatments and the main achievements of modeling on effervescent atomization. Their work, entitled "Modeling on effervescent atomization: A review", was published in SCIENCE CHINA, 2011, DOI: 10.1007/s11433-011-4536-1.

Effervescent atomization is a method involving a twin-fluid process that involves bubbling gas within a liquid. Compared to conventional pressure, rotary and twin-fluid atomizers, the effervescent atomizer offers advantages of smaller drop sizes, reduced injection pressure, lower gas flow, a larger exit orifice, and tolerance for high viscosities. Effervescent atomization has been widely used in gas turbine combustors, IC engines furnaces and boilers, incineration, spray deposition, powder formation and other applications. Recently, the effervescent atomization method has been successfully applied in pharmaceutical coating and suspension plasma spray. Because effervescent atomization can handle a variety of liquids, it can play a pivotal role in reducing energy consumption during combustion and has potential for broad applications in the manufacture of high quality materials.

Effervescent atomizer performance has been the object of extensive research since the late 1980s. Studies on the atomization spray can be grouped into two broad categories: diagnostic measurements and numerical modeling. Diagnostic measurements have made a significant contribution to the development of effervescent atomization technology over the past two decades. Fundamental understanding of the spray process is challenging due to the high complexity of two-phase phenomena statistic behavior. Lin and his co-workers from Jiliang University and Zhejiang Universities, China, have devoted their efforts to establish a comprehensive numerical model to explain the phenomena involved in effervescent atomization spray. Their studies cover modeling of liquid fragmentation, the parametric study of various operating conditions, and the development of a fitting formula for droplet mean size and impinging factors.

The effervescent atomization process involves complex fluid-dynamic and transport phenomena. A typical effervescent atomization spray can be divided into four sub-domains, according to the different mechanisms involved. As shown in Fig.1, in the schematic for effervescent atomization spray generation, the first sub-domain is internal-mixing atomization, in which atomizing gas is bubbled into the liquid. The second step is a resulting two-phase mixture that is discharged from the atomizer orifice. Leaving the nozzle exit, the rapidly expanding gas phase will shatter the liquid into fine droplets, which can be referred to as primary atomization. The third domain lies downstream of the spray. The droplets produced by primary atomization are unstable in the turbulent spray and undergo a series of events such as collision, breakup and coalescence, and finally the droplets entrained in the gas jet will impinge on the plate or undergo further mass and heat transfer. Most modeling work has focused on the external two-phase flow out of the effervescent atomizer exit. The review paper focused on the Lagrangian treatment and introduced a comprehensive model capable of describing both primary and secondary breakup processes and correlating the droplet mean diameter and other spray characteristics with first principle operating conditions. The model comprises two sub-models. The first sub-model is used for simulating the primary breakup of the annular liquid sheath near the orifice and calculating the atomized droplet size. The second sub-model is based on a hybrid Eulerian/Lagrangian coordinate system to simulate the turbulent gas jet and injected droplets. This latter sub-model describes the gas jet and the droplet trajectory in three-dimensional geometry and also considers droplet breakup and collision.

The paper reviews the mechanism of droplet events and the numerical treatments of effervescent atomization, which involved the primary atomization of a Newtonian and a non-Newtonian fluid, particle tracking, secondary atomization and droplets collision. A comprehensive three-dimensional model of droplet-gas flow is introduced to describe the evolution of spray in the effervescent atomization spray. The evolution of droplet mean diameter along the axial distance, the mean size and statistical distribution of atomized droplets at cross sections, as well as the change in droplet velocity are calculated and analyzed to reveal their inner driving forces. The influence of operating conditions and liquid physical properties on atomization performance are discussed. The factors that promote the achievement of good atomization effects are identified. Based on the extensive computation, the influences of various operating conditions and liquid physical properties on atomization effects are quantified. The expressions for the Weber number and the K number, which is related to the operating parameters and liquid properties, are deduced. The formula can be used conveniently and effectively to judge the deposition behaviors of droplets onto surfaces for various Newton liquids. In addition to these achievements, the challenges for future numerical research and the scope for further applications are outlined.

Through academic study and modeling, the critical mechanisms and important parameters involved in effervescent atomization have been deeply understood and the applications of effervescent atomization technology have been successfully extended. This research project was mainly supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China with Grant Nos. 11132008 and 11002136. The development of modeling approaches to atomization spray is based on previous studies involving many researchers from various institutions and universities.

Modeling of the external flow of effervescent atomization can be divided into two sub-models. The first sub-model is used to simulate the primary breakup of the annular liquid sheath near the orifice and calculating the atomized droplet size. The second sub-model is based on a hybrid Eulerian/Lagrangian coordinate system to simulate the turbulent gas jet and injected droplets.

Because effervescent atomization can handle a variety of liquids, it can play a pivotal role in reducing energy consumption during combustion and has potential for broad applications in the manufacture of high quality materials.

Effervescent atomizer performance has been the object of extensive research since the late 1980s. Studies on the atomization spray can be grouped into two broad categories: diagnostic measurements and numerical modeling. Diagnostic measurements have made a significant contribution to the development of effervescent atomization technology over the past two decades. Fundamental understanding of the spray process is challenging due to the high complexity of two-phase phenomena statistic behavior. Lin and his co-workers from Jiliang University and Zhejiang Universities, China, have devoted their efforts to establish a comprehensive numerical model to explain the phenomena involved in effervescent atomization spray. Their studies cover modeling of liquid fragmentation, the parametric study of various operating conditions, and the development of a fitting formula for droplet mean size and impinging factors.

The effervescent atomization process involves complex fluid-dynamic and transport phenomena. A typical effervescent atomization spray can be divided into four sub-domains, according to the different mechanisms involved. As shown in Fig.1, in the schematic for effervescent atomization spray generation, the first sub-domain is internal-mixing atomization, in which atomizing gas is bubbled into the liquid. The second step is a resulting two-phase mixture that is discharged from the atomizer orifice. Leaving the nozzle exit, the rapidly expanding gas phase will shatter the liquid into fine droplets, which can be referred to as primary atomization. The third domain lies downstream of the spray. The droplets produced by primary atomization are unstable in the turbulent spray and undergo a series of events such as collision, breakup and coalescence, and finally the droplets entrained in the gas jet will impinge on the plate or undergo further mass and heat transfer. Most modeling work has focused on the external two-phase flow out of the effervescent atomizer exit. The review paper focused on the Lagrangian treatment and introduced a comprehensive model capable of describing both primary and secondary breakup processes and correlating the droplet mean diameter and other spray characteristics with first principle operating conditions. The model comprises two sub-models. The first sub-model is used for simulating the primary breakup of the annular liquid sheath near the orifice and calculating the atomized droplet size. The second sub-model is based on a hybrid Eulerian/Lagrangian coordinate system to simulate the turbulent gas jet and injected droplets. This latter sub-model describes the gas jet and the droplet trajectory in three-dimensional geometry and also considers droplet breakup and collision.

The paper reviews the mechanism of droplet events and the numerical treatments of effervescent atomization, which involved the primary atomization of a Newtonian and a non-Newtonian fluid, particle tracking, secondary atomization and droplets collision. A comprehensive three-dimensional model of droplet-gas flow is introduced to describe the evolution of spray in the effervescent atomization spray. The evolution of droplet mean diameter along the axial distance, the mean size and statistical distribution of atomized droplets at cross sections, as well as the change in droplet velocity are calculated and analyzed to reveal their inner driving forces. The influence of operating conditions and liquid physical properties on atomization performance are discussed. The factors that promote the achievement of good atomization effects are identified. Based on the extensive computation, the influences of various operating conditions and liquid physical properties on atomization effects are quantified. The expressions for the Weber number and the K number, which is related to the operating parameters and liquid properties, are deduced. The formula can be used conveniently and effectively to judge the deposition behaviors of droplets onto surfaces for various Newton liquids. In addition to these achievements, the challenges for future numerical research and the scope for further applications are outlined.

Through academic study and modeling, the critical mechanisms and important parameters involved in effervescent atomization have been deeply understood and the applications of effervescent atomization technology have been successfully extended. This research project was mainly supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China with Grant Nos. 11132008 and 11002136. The development of modeling approaches to atomization spray is based on previous studies involving many researchers from various institutions and universities.
